Bhubaneswar, July 22: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has clarified that the Paika Rebellion has not been omitted from the Class 8 Social Science curriculum. Addressing recent concerns, NCERT stated that the topic will be included in the second volume of the textbook, scheduled for release between September and October this year.
According to NCERT, the upcoming volume will focus on regional resistance movements and armed uprisings, with chapters dedicated to key events such as Odisha’s Paika Rebellion, the Khordha Rebellion, Punjab’s Kuka Movement, and the Sikh Revolt. The volume is currently in its final stages of preparation.
The clarification follows public discussion surrounding the absence of the Paika Rebellion from the chapter titled "The Colonial Era in India" in Volume 1 of the Class 8 Social Science textbook, Exploring Society: India and Beyond. NCERT explained that the currently available textbook is only the first part of a two-volume series.
The second volume, officials confirmed, will provide a comprehensive and structured account of major historical events and uprisings. The Paika Rebellion, a significant moment in India’s resistance against colonial rule, will be covered in greater detail.
NCERT emphasized that the revised format aims to offer students a richer understanding of India’s diverse historical and cultural legacy.
