Bhubaneswar, August 25: Efforts to secure Geographical Indication (GI) tags for several traditional products of Odisha have intensified, with applications for Dhenkanal’s Palabaigana, Sambalpur’s Sarasatia and Manikapatna curd from the Puri-Chilika region reaching the final stage.
OUAT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabhat Kumar Routray, speaking at the university’s 65th Foundation Day celebrations, said the required information and documents for the products have already been submitted.
He said detailed documentation has particularly been prepared for Manikapatna curd, covering its traditional preparation process, ingredients and historical significance.
Meanwhile, efforts are also underway to obtain GI recognition for Keonjhar’s traditional badi and the special ‘Fenua Biri’ variety of black gram used in its preparation. The variety is cultivated in the Banspal area and is considered particularly suitable for producing high-quality badi. Necessary documents for the GI application have been submitted, officials said.
A GI tag is expected to provide these traditional products with a distinct identity while creating better economic opportunities for local farmers and producers. It could also help promote Odisha’s traditional agricultural practices and food heritage at national and international levels.
