BMW India launches extended wheelbase X1 for premium comfort
BMW India has officially introduced its new X1 Long Wheelbase model at a price of Rs 49.90 lakh, ex-showroom. Available exclusively in the sDrive18i M Sport variant, this luxury compact SUV brings a roomier cabin and a refined petrol powertrain to the market. Indian buyers consistently show a strong preference for extended-wheelbase vehicles, prioritising rear-seat legroom for a superior chauffeur-driven experience. While this new model focuses on petrol propulsion, buyers seeking diesel options can still choose the standard wheelbase X1.
Expanded Dimensions Bring Enhanced Passenger Space
Measuring 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width, and 1,641 mm in height, the expanded vehicle dwarfs the standard version. Engineers stretched the wheelbase by 108 mm to reach 2,802 mm, which increases the total length by 116 mm. These modified proportions directly benefit rear-seat occupants. Passengers now enjoy 109 mm of extra knee room along with a rear seat cushion that extends an additional 15 mm, ensuring exceptional comfort during long drives.
Upgraded Powertrain and Dynamic Performance
Under the hood, a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine generates 156 hp and delivers 230 Nm of torque. This setup pairs smoothly with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that channels power to the front wheels. While torque remains identical to previous iterations, this retuned engine produces an extra 22 hp for better acceleration.
Visually, the SUV sports 18-inch alloy wheels, a signature kidney grille, adaptive LED headlamps, and flush-fitting door handles. Inside, the cabin features electrically adjustable front seats with driver memory, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic glass roof. Entertainment relies on a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, while integrated navigation and a voice assistant simplify operation. Safety features are robust, including eight airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, a suite of ADAS capabilities, and Park Assist Plus. This extended vehicle will directly compete against the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, and Volvo XC40 in the premium compact SUV category.
