New Delhi, July 27:Opposition leaders, led by Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Monday, condemning the alleged police action against students demonstrating over the NEET paper leak issue.

Holding placards and a large banner, MPs gathered near the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament, raising slogans and demanding an explanation from the Union Home Minister over the alleged use of excessive force against the protesters.

The demonstration saw participation from several opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Mahua Maji.

Separately, MPs from the DMK also staged a protest, reiterating their demand for the abolition of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the nationwide entrance examination for medical admissions.

The Congress-led opposition has vowed to continue pressing the government on the issue during the ongoing Parliament session, seeking action against those responsible for the alleged assault on students as well as an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has written to Shah, demanding accountability for what he described as a "barbaric assault" on peaceful student protesters. In the letter, he questioned whether the Home Minister had authorised the use of "lethal force", including pellet guns, against the demonstrators.

Gandhi stressed that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to a democracy and said it is the government's duty to ensure the safety of protesters while addressing their concerns through dialogue.

Describing the incident as a violation of democratic norms, Gandhi said the alleged violence had shocked the nation. He asserted that students and youth, who represent the country's future, were demanding justice and accountability, adding that "their voice will be heard."
