NSAs of India and Pakistan Maintain Contact amid Post-Strike Tensions
Communication channels between India and Pakistan remain open at the National Security Advisor (NSA) level, despite the heightened military tensions following India's "Operation Sindoor" strikes on Wednesday, May 7th. Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, has confirmed contact between the two NSAs, although Indian sources emphasize ongoing military preparedness.4
Diplomatic Channels Active
Mr. Dar confirmed in an interview with TRT World that contact has occurred between India's NSA Ajit Doval and his Pakistani counterpart, Lt Gen Asim Malik (who also serves as DG ISI). This communication follows earlier discussions between NSA Doval and US NSA and Secretary of State Marco Rubio shortly after the Indian operation. Diplomatic channels through the respective High Commissions are also active; India's charge d’affaires in Islamabad, Geetika Srivastava, was summoned by Pakistan's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday to receive a protest regarding the strikes.
India Maintains its Vigil
While acknowledging the existence of communication, Indian officials have sought to manage expectations, with one source quoted stating, "Being in touch doesn’t mean being in talks," thereby downplaying the nature of the engagement. Concurrently, Indian military formations remain on a heightened state of security alert following the operation, which targeted nine alleged terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoK. India maintains it is fully prepared to address any further actions from Pakistan.
The confirmation of contact between the National Security Advisors of India and Pakistan provides a crucial, channel for communication amidst the current military standoff. While this dialogue exists, India's official have kept a continued vigilance and readiness, indicating the delicate and tense nature of the prevailing situation following Operation Sindoor.
