Bhubaneswar, June 6: One of the most significant religious festivals in Odisha, Savitri Brata, is observed with fervor by married Odia women across the state. Held on the Amavasya day in the month of Jyestha, this sacred occasion is also known as Savitri Uwaans in western Odisha and "Vat Savitri Puja" in other regions.
Savitri Brata holds deep cultural and spiritual significance as married women fast and offer prayers to Lakshmi Narayan and Maa Sabitri. The rituals are dedicated to seeking sound health and longevity for their husbands.
Legend has it that Savitri Amavasya, or Savitri Brata, commemorates the devotion of Savitri and Satyavana. Satyavana, destined to die within a year, was revived through Savitri's unwavering penance and devotion. Savitri's determined plea to the God of Death, Yama, resulted in her husband's resurrection, restoring his lost kingdom.
On this auspicious day, Hindu women wake early to bathe and adorn themselves in new attire and jewelry. They offer nine types of fruits and flowers to Goddess Savitri, along with a variety of Bhoga including rice, mangoes, jackfruit, and bananas. Throughout the day, they observe a fast, culminating in the consumption of the Bhoga after performing all the rituals.
As part of the tradition, women bow to their husbands and elders in the afternoon, symbolizing respect and gratitude. The festival is not just a religious observance but a celebration of love, devotion, and the enduring bond between husband and wife.
Sabitri Brata serves as a reminder of the power of love and devotion in overcoming adversity, inspiring married women to nurture and cherish their relationships with unwavering dedication.
