Winter has tightened its hold on Odisha, with several regions experiencing a significant drop in night temperatures and thick blankets of fog. According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar for December 27, 2025, the state is witnessing a sharp contrast between chilly nights and dry daytime weather.

Phulbani and G. Udayagiri Lead the Chill

The interior and hilly regions of the state are feeling the brunt of the cold. Phulbani emerged as the coldest place in the plains, recording a minimum temperature of 6.4°C. However, the record for the lowest temperature overall goes to the hill station of G. Udayagiri, where the mercury plummeted to a freezing 4.4°C. Other areas like Rourkela and Koraput also recorded single-digit temperatures, staying well below the seasonal average.

Fog Alert for Commuters

Visibility became a major concern early this morning as dense fog was reported in Dhenkanal, Phulbani, and Rourkela. In these areas, visibility dropped to between 50 and 200 meters, making travel hazardous. Moderate fog was observed in Koraput, while the capital city, Bhubaneswar, experienced shallow fog with visibility around 800 meters.

Weather in the Twin Cities

The Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded relatively mild but cool temperatures. Bhubaneswar saw a minimum of 13.3°C, which is nearly 1 degree below normal, while Cuttack was slightly cooler at 11.6°C (almost 2 degrees below the average). In contrast, Paralakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 29.4°C, highlighting the vast temperature variations across different districts.

Despite the biting cold in the early hours, dry weather has prevailed across all districts of Odisha, with no immediate signs of rainfall. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the cold, especially in the interior districts where the departure from normal temperatures is most significant.

• Day 1 (Valid until morning of Dec 28): Fog is very likely in districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bolangir, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Sundargarh.
• Day 2 & Day 3 (Dec 28 to Dec 30): The foggy conditions will persist in similar regions, specifically covering Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Sundargarh.
• Day 4 & Day 5 (Dec 30 to Jan 1): As the New Year approaches, fog will continue to affect districts like Mayurbhanj, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Sundargarh.
