Bhubaneswar, August 3: In a major push towards smart traffic management, the Odisha government is set to implement an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based e-challan system on national and state highways to improve road safety, ensure transparent enforcement and curb traffic violations.

Under the new system, high-resolution AI-enabled cameras installed along highways will automatically detect traffic offences by reading vehicle registration number plates and monitoring compliance with traffic regulations, including speed limits and lane discipline. Once a violation is detected, the information will be transmitted to a central server, following which an e-challan will be generated automatically.

The AI-powered system will identify a range of traffic violations, including overspeeding, riding without a helmet, driving without a seat belt, using a mobile phone while driving, jumping red traffic signals and driving in the wrong lane. Vehicle owners will receive e-challan notifications through SMS and online portals.

Officials said the technology will function round the clock, reducing human intervention and minimising errors in traffic enforcement. The evidence-based system is expected to make the challan process more transparent while improving the efficiency of traffic monitoring and management.

The initiative is aimed at reducing road accidents, discouraging reckless driving and encouraging greater compliance with traffic rules. Authorities have urged motorists to follow speed limits, wear helmets and seat belts, and adhere to all road safety regulations to avoid penalties and ensure safer travel.

The AI-based e-challan system is expected to mark a significant milestone in Odisha's transition towards intelligent traffic management and contribute to creating a safer, more disciplined and accident-free road network across the state.
