State officials order urgent relocations targeting vulnerable coastal communities

Odisha officials initiated urgent relocations across vulnerable southern districts on Sunday following the formation of Cyclonic Storm Murasu over the Bay of Bengal. State administration activated contingency protocols as the developing weather system intensified, threatening coastal communities with severe downpours and strong winds.

Meteorologists confirm the deep depression escalated into a cyclonic storm by late morning. Forecasters expect this system to evolve into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday. Tracking west-northwestwards, it will likely hit the southern Andhra Pradesh coastline between Nellore and Narsapur on Tuesday morning. Projected wind speeds could reach 120 kmph during landfall. This specific disturbance takes its name from an Indian proposal, which translates to a war drum in Tamil. Similar weather systems historically cause substantial infrastructure disruption along this eastern coastline, demanding rigorous pre-emptive planning from state disaster management units.

Rainfall triggers fresh warnings

Southern Odisha faces three consecutive days of intense precipitation. Weather experts issued yellow alerts for Ganjam and Gajapati starting Monday. Conditions will deteriorate by Tuesday, prompting orange warnings for heavy to very heavy rain in Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Yellow alerts will remain active for Khordha, Puri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nayagarh. Similar weather warnings extend through Thursday across multiple interior and southern zones as the storm progresses.Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari reviewed precautionary strategies during a high-level weekend meeting. Top bureaucrats and emergency personnel mapped out detailed contingency plans. Relocation efforts prioritise residents in landslide-prone regions, recalling the significant destruction previously witnessed during Cyclone Arnab. District collectors completed ground assessments and prepared to shift populations into designated safe shelters."We will start evacuating people. Those whom the district administration identifies as living in vulnerable conditions will be persuaded to relocate to safer places," Pujari stated, confirming that advance preparations remain complete across districts.

Ganjam enforces strict safety protocols

Ganjam Collector V. Keerthi Vasan ordered local officials to shift all at-risk residents to secure shelters by Sunday night. Local administrators must stockpile essential rations, cooked food, medical supplies, and backup generators in flood-prone villages. Specialised medical teams remain on standby to handle potential waterborne disease outbreaks or other health emergencies."Every life is precious," Vasan noted, directing officials to distribute relief materials generously. Officials urged fishermen to avoid entering the rough sea until Thursday. National Disaster Response Force units stand ready for deployment in sensitive locations to guarantee public safety.
