Bhubaneswar, Aug 31: Odisha recorded a staggering 1,99,954 cognisable crime incidents in 2023, as revealed by a Home Department white paper presented in the state Assembly on Friday.
This represents a nearly 12% increase in the registration of cognisable crimes compared to the 1,78,190 cases reported in 2022. Despite the overall rise, the state saw a slight decrease in murder cases, with 1,362 incidents in 2023 compared to 1,379 in the previous year.
The white paper also highlighted a surge in cybercrime, with 2,348 cases reported in 2023, including 362 financial frauds. This marks an increase from the 1,983 cybercrime cases recorded in 2022. The Children & Women Online Abuse Monitoring Unit in Bhubaneswar received 571 complaints related to the uploading of child pornography or sexually explicit content, including rape and gang-rape.
Furthermore, the state received 82,132 complaints from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) regarding the uploading of child sexual abuse materials from IP addresses within Odisha. The Odisha Police also responded to 16,602 calls related to financial frauds on the cybercrime helpline in 2023.
The state witnessed 370 dacoity cases, 2,961 robberies, 6,071 burglaries, 16,851 thefts, 6,196 cheating cases, and 1,655 riots during the year. Additionally, 2,826 sexual assault cases were registered across various police stations in the state.
In 2023, Odisha recorded 11,992 accident cases and 1,49,670 miscellaneous cases. The state government also reported that Maoist activities remained under control, with three Maoist cadres killed and 13 arrested during the year.
