Odisha: Over 2 lakh migratory birds arrive at Chilika Lake

Bhubaneswar, November 26: Chilika Lake is witnessing a remarkable surge in migratory bird arrivals this season, with more than two lakh birds counted so far. The Chilika Wildlife Division has reported sightings of 87 species, a significant increase from approximately 60 during the same period last year.

Amlan Nayak, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Chilika Wildlife Division, expressed optimism about the early migratory trends. "This year, the number of migratory birds has surpassed two lakh, and 87 species have been recorded. At this time last year, there were around 60 species, which is a positive sign," Nayak told . However, he noted that it was too early to comment on the presence or absence of any specific species.

To protect the birds, the division has ramped up efforts to prevent poaching, especially along the vulnerable shorelines. "We recently detected two poachers in the Tangi area. One was apprehended, while the other remains at large. Poachers tend to be more active along the shores, so we are closely monitoring these areas using drones and conducting checks in suspected locations. Our approach is one of zero tolerance towards poaching," Nayak added.

The authorities have overhauled their patrolling system to combat this threat more effectively. "We have revamped our patrolling strategy to ensure 24x7 coverage of the entire shoreline with the support of the Chilika Development Authority staff. It's a comprehensive effort, and we are leaving no stone unturned in our pursuit of offenders. Our stance on poaching is clear: zero tolerance," Nayak said.

To raise public awareness about the importance of conservation, the division has planned outreach activities near the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary. However, due to administrative protocols, only a limited number of groups will be allowed inside the sanctuary.

Chilika typically hosts around 222-223 migratory species each winter, and officials are hopeful that the numbers will continue to rise as the season progresses. "Most of the migratory birds are already here, and we're well-prepared for the coming weeks," Nayak said.
