Devdutt Padikkal Century Propels India to Strong Start in Second Test Match at Colombo

Padikkal scores back-to-back centuries pushing India to solid start

Devdutt Padikkal smashed his second consecutive Test century, guiding India to 300 for 5 on day one of their second Test against Sri Lanka at SSC in Colombo. Debutant Saransh Jain and Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 4 and 7 respectively at stumps.

Padikkal constructed his 117-run knock through three vital stands. He shared a 120-run partnership with Shubman Gill and added 74 runs alongside Ravindra Jadeja. Indian batters thrived in hot, humid conditions after Sri Lanka chose to bowl. Historically, the SSC surface favors batters heavily during the first few days before drying out to assist spinners. This local pitch behavior justified the early aggressive approach from the top order. Padikkal survived two early dropped catches at point and slip before settling into his rhythm.

Sri Lankan Bowlers Strike Back

Asitha Fernando emerged as the most successful bowler for the home team, taking 3 for 46 in short, effective bursts. Lahiru Kumara and Keshara Nuwantha claimed one wicket each. Kumara bowled dangerously, hitting Rishabh Pant on the forearm and forcing him to retire hurt. Shortly after, another short delivery struck Jadeja on the same arm. Despite suffering from cramps, Jadeja battled on until Asitha bowled him out. Nuwantha claimed the prized wicket of Padikkal with a quick delivery that clipped the off stump while he defended.

Shubman Gill scored a calm 50 runs before edging Kumara outside the off stump. Yashasvi Jaiswal showed great intent early in the day, striking 45 runs and hitting several boundaries before Asitha found his inside edge. Indian batters dominated the spinners, using their feet confidently and accumulating 36 boundaries throughout the day's play. Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva rotated seven different bowlers, but the Indian lineup kept the scoreboard moving efficiently.
