Bhubaneswar, September 6:The Odisha Revenue & Disaster Management Department has directed all district Collectors to ensure the uniform use of revised English spellings of place names in government offices and institutions.
Additional Chief Secretary Dr Arabinda Kumar Padhee asked Collectors to review all official nameplates and signboards and replace outdated spellings with those approved by the state government.
The move follows a June 22, 2026 Gazette notification requiring government establishments to adopt the revised spellings within a month, while private and non-government institutions have been given six months.
Under the changes,Angul becomes “Anugola”, Balasore “Baleshwar”, Kendrapara “Kendrapada” and Cuttack “Kataka”.Similarly, “Jeypore” and “Soro” are to be replaced with “Jayapur” and “Sora”.
Collectors have been asked to personally monitor implementation and submit compliance reports within one week. They have also been advised to encourage private and non-government institutions to adopt the revised spellings within the stipulated period.
