Rayagada, Aug 3: In a tragic incident, an elderly woman was killed and two others sustained injuries after a tanker rammed into a roadside hut near Gumma Ghati, around 15 kilometres away from Odisha’s Rayagada district in the wee hours of Sunday.

According to reports, the accident took place around 3 AM when a tanker traveling from the Tikiri area toward Rayagada lost control—reportedly due to brake failure—and crashed into a roadside hut, destroying it along with two nearby shops.

In the mishap, an elderly woman, identified as Laxmi Patra, who was sleeping in the hut, died on the spot and two others were injured.

The tanker driver, identified as Deepak Kujur from Tusur in Sundargarh district, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital in critical condition.

Upon getting the information, firefighters along with local police, and the driver’s association arrived at the scene and rescued the injured.

Though the exact reason is yet to be ascertained, an initial investigation suggests that brake failure might have caused the accident.

Further investigation into the matter was underway.
