Puri, Aug 27: In response to the detection of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in the Pipili area of Puri district, the authorities have initiated a massive culling operation. Over 5,000 chickens have already been culled as part of the ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak, which was confirmed after the deaths of 1,800 birds at a local poultry farm.
The epicentre of the outbreak is located approximately 19 miles from Bhubaneswar, the state capital. The state government, upon receiving reports of mass chicken deaths at the farm in Pipili, dispatched a veterinary team to investigate. Samples were collected and tested, confirming the presence of the H5N1 virus. In response, culling operations began on Saturday, with 300 chickens culled that day and more than 4,700 on Sunday.
Jagannath Nanda, Additional Director of Disease Control, announced that a total of 20,000 birds are expected to be culled in Pipili. Manoj Patnaik, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, stated that all birds within a one-kilometer radius of the affected farm would be culled, and the farm would be prohibited from keeping chickens for the next five months. The government has assured that affected farmers and poultry owners will receive compensation in accordance with official guidelines.
