Bhubaneswar, June 23:Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday paid homage to five Odia workers whose mortal remains were brought to Bhubaneswar following their deaths in a suspected ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.
The Chief Minister offered floral tributes to the deceased workers, all belonging to the Juang tribal community from Keonjhar district, and extended his condolences to their grieving family members at the airport.
In view of the tragic incident and the rising death toll, CM Majhi earlier announced an enhancement of ex gratia assistance from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased worker from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
Expressing profound sorrow over the loss of lives, the Chief Minister assured the affected families that the state government would provide all possible support during this difficult time.
The accident took place on June 21 at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district, where an ammonia gas leak reportedly affected several workers, including migrant labourers from Odisha.
The number of fatalities among Odia workers increased to seven on Tuesday after Jamuni Juang of Keonjhar succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. All seven victims of the incident were residents of Keonjhar district.
