Bhubaneswar, April 27:Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his delight on Monday after the Ambassador of Japan to India, Ono Keiichi, praised the rich culinary heritage of Odisha, particularly the traditional and nutritious dish, Dalma.
Posting on his X handle, CM Majhi wrote, “Delighted to see you enjoying the flavours of Odisha, Ambassador Ono San! Dalma is the heart of our kitchen, and we are honoured by your kind words. May our bond continue to grow over many more such meals. Ono San, Arigatou Gozaimasu!”
He highlighted that Dalma is more than just a culinary delight; it represents Odisha’s culture and warm hospitality. The Chief Minister noted that such appreciation underscores the cultural harmony between Odisha and Japan, expressing hope that this friendship will strengthen in the days ahead.
On April 24, a joint venture between JSW Steel and Japan’s JFE Steel was inaugurated in Rengali, Sambalpur district, Odisha. CM Majhi, along with other dignitaries, attended the event, which also welcomed Ambassador Ono Keiichi. During the program, the Ambassador was served traditional Odia dishes, with Dalma earning special praise for its flavor and authenticity.
Following the event, the Japanese Ambassador shared his experience on X, writing, “Enjoyed #Dalma in #Odisha—delicious, and a wonderful reflection of Odisha’s rich culinary culture!”
Dalma, a staple of Odia cuisine, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. Prepared with lentils and vegetables such as pumpkin, raw papaya, potato, and drumstick, seasoned with aromatic spices, it is traditionally offered in temples and features prominently in sacred and festive occasions across the state.
