Bhubaneswar, September 26: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Ports, Shipping & Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal after the Centre designated Paradip Port as a ‘Mega Port’.
In a post on ‘X’, Majhi said, “The designation of Paradip Port as a ‘Mega Port’ under the Indian Ports Act, 2025 is a landmark recognition of Odisha’s growing strength in India’s maritime economy.”
The Chief Minister highlighted that with this distinction, Paradip becomes the only Mega Port on India’s eastern coast, reaffirming its strategic importance as a major gateway for trade, industry and connectivity.
“This recognition reflects the Port’s expanding capacity, robust infrastructure and operational strength, and will further enhance Odisha’s potential to attract investment, strengthen logistics and create new opportunities for our people,” Majhi wrote.
The CM further said, “As Odisha moves towards becoming a leading hub for trade, industry and maritime growth, Paradip Port will play an increasingly important role in powering the State’s economic transformation and contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.”
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for his visionary leadership and to Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal Ji for this significant recognition of Paradip Port. This is a proud moment for every Odia and a new milestone in Odisha’s journey of progress,” added Majhi.
The Central Government has designated Paradip Port as a "Mega Port" under the Indian Ports Act, 2025, making it the only Mega Port on India's eastern coast. Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways on Friday issued a notification declaring four ports as mega ports after an assessment of prescribed benchmarks. The three others are Deendayal Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mundra Port -- the only non-major port in the category.
The Paradip port handles large volumes of coal, iron ore, fertilisers, crude oil and other bulk cargo, serving as a critical logistics hub for eastern and central India.
