Odia dancer Angeleena brings classical Odissi grace to Seoul

South Korea witnessed the grace of Odisha’s classical heritage as Odia Odissi dancer Angeleena performed by the iconic Han River during the inaugural India Day celebrations in Seoul. Organised by the Embassy of India, this landmark cultural festival aimed to bridge the diplomatic and cultural gap between the two nations. Currently, around 18,000 Indian expatriates reside in South Korea, making such public showcases vital for fostering deeper community ties and mutual understanding.

Graceful Moves on International Stage

Performing under clear blue skies, Angeleena led a talented troupe from the Nrityantar Odissi group. Team members Ashwashana, Shreyashi, and five-year-old Mihika Mahnoor joined her to captivate the local audience. The rhythmic footwork and expressive mudras synchronised beautifully with the glistening river waves, drawing large crowds of curious residents. Passersby paused their weekend walks, attracted by the traditional Indian music and the vibrant setup that featured booths representing all 28 Indian states.

Surprise Odisha Connection In Seoul

Beyond her classical performance, Angeleena discovered an unexpected link to her home soil right in the heart of South Korea. While backstage, the troupe interacted with a local Korean K-Pop group. To her absolute surprise, one of the leading performers in the K-Pop group hailed from Rourkela, a major industrial city in Odisha. This chance meeting highlighted how deeply cultural exchanges are evolving, showing that young Odia talent is successfully breaking into mainstream global entertainment formats like Korean pop music.

Uniting Diverse Cultures

Diplomatic leaders emphasized the growing strategic and emotional ties between the two Asian nations. Ambassador Gokarnal Das noted that when hearts connect, true cultural unity follows, viewing the festival as a bridge between Korean and Indian citizens. The event successfully brought regional diversity to life, offering South Korean locals a rare chance to experience the sights, sounds, and artistic flavors of eastern India. Through artists like Angeleena, Odisha continues to strengthen its global footprint, proving that classical Indian art forms remain a powerful tool for international diplomacy.
