New Delhi, Aug 7: Floor leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) met on Thursday and unanimously authorised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda, who also serves as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, to select the alliance’s candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election.
The meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and the announcement was made by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
“In the NDA Parliamentary Party floor leaders' meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, it was unanimously decided to authorise Prime Minister Modi and Leader of the House JP Nadda to begin the process of selecting the Vice Presidential candidate. The decision taken by the Prime Minister will be accepted by all NDA constituents,” Rijiju stated.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the schedule for the Vice Presidential election. Nominations can be filed until August 21, with polling and counting scheduled for September 9, 2025.
The election follows the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President on July 21, citing health concerns.
Meanwhile, opposition parties are also expected to begin discussions in the coming days to finalise their candidate for the election. The Electoral College list for the 2025 Vice Presidential election has already been finalised by the ECI.
