Mumbai Indians release three veteran coaches before IPL 2027
Mumbai Indians have completely restructured their backroom setup by parting ways with three key support staff members before the Indian Premier League 2027 tournament. Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey, and Carl Hopkinson will no longer serve as pace bowling, spin bowling, and fielding coaches. This major shakeup occurs shortly after Kieron Pollard replaced Mahela Jayawardene as head coach for the five-time champions.

Veteran coaches leave setup
Malinga brings an end to a deeply rooted relationship with the franchise. He famously led their pace attack during four title-winning campaigns and later mentored the squad. Former fast bowler Malinga most recently returned in 2024 to manage the bowling unit. Mhambrey also leaves behind strong credentials. He previously helped guide the Indian national squad to a T20 World Cup victory in the West Indies before rejoining Mumbai in 2025. Hopkinson joined during that same 2025 cycle to improve ground fielding standards.
Franchise expresses gratitude
Releasing an official statement, team officials thanked all three departing members for their deep dedication and service. Representatives highlighted their hard work and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the memorable moments they helped create over several seasons. Historically, Mumbai Indians have consistently built highly experienced management groups to sustain their dominance in modern franchise cricket. Management wished Malinga, Mhambrey, and Hopkinson the very best moving forward as Kieron Pollard prepares to establish a completely fresh technical team.
