New Delhi, June 29: The southwest monsoon has now covered the entire country nearly a week ahead of schedule, bringing widespread rainfall across northern India. In Uttarakhand, a cloudburst struck the Uttarkashi district early Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of two construction workers, while seven others remain missing.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in multiple districts of Uttarakhand, including Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, and Nainital for June 29 and 30. In light of the weather conditions, authorities have temporarily suspended the Chardham Yatra to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Himachal Pradesh is also on high alert, with a red warning in place for 12 districts. The state has witnessed 17 rain-related fatalities since the monsoon arrived on June 20, as landslides and flash floods continue to pose serious risks.
