Shimla, Aug 24: Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a tragic monsoon season, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirming 298 deaths since the onset of monsoon June 20.
Of these, 152 fatalities were due to rain-related incidents like landslides, flash floods, drowning, lightning, electrocution, and falls from steep terrain. The remaining 146 deaths occurred in road accidents, many linked to slippery conditions and poor visibility.
Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, and Shimla were among the worst-hit districts. Infrastructure damage is extensive, with public losses amounting to over ₹2,347 crore, mainly affecting roads, water systems, and the power sector. Private losses include the destruction of 313 pucca houses, damage to 2,728 hectares of crops, and the death of 1,824 livestock and over 25,000 poultry birds.
Mandi alone reported over 220 blocked roads and significant power outages. Water supply schemes were also disrupted across multiple districts.
Authorities are working round the clock to restore essential services, but continuous rainfall is slowing recovery. The SDMA urges residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay vigilant in vulnerable areas.
This monsoon has turned devastating for the hill state, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure.
