A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of southern Mexico sending strong tremors across parts of Mexico and Central America and prompting precautionary evacuations.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicentre was located about 48 kilometres southwest of Aquiles Serdán, near Puerto Madero in the southern state of Chiapas. The quake struck at a shallow depth of around 10 to 18 kilometres, intensifying the shaking across the region.
The tremors were felt far beyond the epicentre, reaching Guatemala, El Salvador, and even parts of Mexico City, hundreds of kilometres away. Thousands of residents evacuated homes, offices, and other buildings as a safety measure.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of fatalities or major structural damage, though emergency teams continue to monitor the situation and assess the impact.
The shallow depth of the earthquake contributed to its strong intensity, making it widely felt across southern Mexico and neighbouring Central American countries.
