Kerala bus conductor dies by suicide after losing child custody, sparks debate on custody laws

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 18: A tragic case from Kerala has reignited discussions on child custody laws and gender neutrality after 38-year-old KSRTC bus conductor Ranjeesh allegedly died by suicide following a court's decision to grant custody of his daughter to his former wife.

Ranjeesh, a resident of Kumali in Kerala, had reportedly been raising his daughter while also caring for his elderly parents despite working as a bus conductor. According to reports, he had been the child's primary caregiver after his separation.

However, a family court later awarded custody of the child to his ex-wife. The decision reportedly left Ranjeesh deeply distressed. He was later found dead in an apparent case of suicide, triggering widespread reactions on social media.

The incident has sparked a heated online debate over India's child custody framework. Many users have questioned whether existing practices unintentionally favour mothers in custody disputes and have called for reforms that place greater emphasis on the role of the primary caregiver, regardless of gender.

Under Indian law, courts decide custody matters based on the best interests and welfare of the child, considering factors such as emotional well-being, education, financial stability, and the child's overall development. While there is no legal rule automatically granting custody to mothers, critics argue that mothers often receive preference in practice, especially in cases involving younger children.

The incident has renewed calls from several groups and social media users for gender-neutral custody laws that evaluate each parent's caregiving role on an equal basis while continuing to prioritise the child's welfare.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Ranjeesh's death. If you or someone you know is struggling with emotional distress or suicidal thoughts, seeking support from trusted family members, friends, or a qualified mental health professional can make a significant difference.
