Malkangiri, June 19: In a major setback to the Maoist movement, 12 hardcore cadres have surrendered before the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bhadradri Kothagudem district, near the Odisha-Telangana border. The development was confirmed by SP Rohit Raj on Wednesday.
The surrender comes in the wake of intensified anti-Maoist operations by security forces in the forested border regions adjoining Odisha’s Malkangiri district. Officials said that the sustained operations have led to the neutralization of several Maoists in recent weeks, triggering panic and internal unrest within the outlawed group.
Under increasing pressure, the 12 Maoists reportedly opted to surrender in a bid to escape the ongoing crackdown. Sources said those who surrendered were involved in multiple incidents of violence and have been active in Maoist strongholds.
SP Rohit Raj stated that all surrendered cadres will be provided full support and assistance under the government's rehabilitation and reintegration policy. He added that efforts are underway to help them transition into the mainstream and lead a peaceful life.
