Bhubaneswar, May 23: A Maoist couple in Jharkhand, who were once active in armed insurgency, have surrendered to the police and decided to lead a peaceful life following the birth of their child. The couple, identified as Darshan (36) from Hatnaburu village, West Singhbhum district, and Bandana (20) from Hatiburu village under Goelkera police limits, had been involved in Maoist activities for several years.
Darshan joined the Maoist organization around a decade ago and was a close associate of Maoist leader Misir Besra. He operated with a rifle in the forests of Saranda, Kohlan, and Podahat, instilling fear in local communities. Bandana had joined the Maoists three years ago and served as an arms cadre and leader within the women’s wing of the organization.
During their time in the Maoist camps, they welcomed a son, which became a turning point in their lives. The responsibility of parenthood led them to reconsider their path, and they decided to abandon violence, leave their firearms behind, and return to mainstream society.
The couple recently surrendered to police along with 27 other Maoists, citing the well-being of their child as the primary reason. Darshan and Bandana have stated their intention to return to their villages, take up farming, and provide a secure life for their son. The government has assured financial assistance, which will also be used to support their child’s education.
