Kolkata, July 3: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has on Thursday raised alarm over the growing threat posed by inflammatory content and cybercrime on digital platforms. In a strongly worded letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Banerjee called for urgent legislative and policy-level measures to tackle the menace.

In her two-page communication, Banerjee flagged the spread of “incendiary narratives, misleading stories, and fake videos” on social media, stating that such content has played a role in fuelling criminal tendencies within parts of society.

“These posts not only spread misinformation but also stoke communal tensions, provoke violence, disturb social harmony, and often lead to crimes against women,” the Chief Minister wrote. She highlighted how the real-time and far-reaching nature of digital misuse worsens the impact dramatically.
