Puri, May 15: The sacred Janmabedi- believed to be the birthplace of Lord Jagannath- situated in front of the Shri Gundicha Temple, is set to don a new look ahead of this year’s Rath Yatra. The beautification work, focusing on the southern and frontal sections of the temple, is being carried out under the close supervision of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).
SJTA Chief Administrator Arvinda Padhee, who recently inspected the progress, announced via his official X (formerly Twitter) account that the project is on track for completion before the annual chariot festival begins.
As part of the revamp, two new information and donation centers are being constructed on either side of the Singhadwara (main entrance) of the Janmabedi. These structures will feature architectural elements inspired by the Bada Deula — the main spire of the Shri Jagannath Temple — blending heritage with functionality.
In a move to enhance the devotional experience, a large LED screen, similar to the one at the Shree Jagannath Temple's Singhadwara, will be installed outside the Gundicha Temple’s main gate. This screen will display rituals and sacred visuals (Nitikanti) of Lord Jagannath for devotees and visitors.
The front façade of the Gundicha Temple is also being transformed with the use of khondalite stones, while the boundary walls will be adorned with artistic murals to elevate visual appeal. Landscaping elements will further beautify the surroundings, creating a serene and spiritually immersive atmosphere.
The temple’s Meghanada boundary and front stretch will be illuminated with decorative lighting, ensuring the site radiates with divine brightness, particularly during the Rath Yatra festivities.
The entire project, estimated at ₹1.63 crore, is being executed under the direct oversight of SJTA, with an expected completion by the end of May.
Development Administrator Debabrata Sahu confirmed that the work is progressing as per schedule, under the constant monitoring of the Chief Administrator. He added that the outer precinct of Gundicha Temple will be designed to mirror the Parikrama Marg (circumambulatory path) of the Shree Jagannath Temple, offering pilgrims a refreshing and spiritually enriching experience.
With these enhancements, the Gundicha Temple is poised to become an even more prominent focal point during Rath Yatra, captivating devotees and visitors alike.
