Puri, Aug 18: Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, will be dressed in the vibrant Banabhoji Besha today, marking a special occasion during the Bhadraba Krushna Dasami, the 10th day of the dark fortnight in Bhadraba.
This attire depicts the deities as cowherd boys, ready to embark on a picnic, embodying the adventurous and nature-loving spirit of Lord Krishna.
Lord Krishna, considered a complete incarnation (Purna Avatar) of Lord Jagannath, inspires many rituals in the Jagannath temple, especially after his birth during Janmashtami. The Banabhoji Besha is a reflection of Lord Krishna's playful and carefree nature, as he is depicted going on a picnic with his elder brother, Balaram, and friends, carrying pots filled with cream (lahuni).
In this attire, the deities are adorned with numerous gold ornaments that emphasize their royal lineage. Each deity’s head is crowned with 25 exquisite ornaments, and additional jewelry including odhiani (a special shawl), tilaka, and multiple necklaces are also used to enhance their divine appearance. This unique dress symbolizes the joy and festive spirit associated with Lord Krishna's legendary adventures.
