New Delhi, Oct 6: A dramatic incident unfolded in the Supreme Court on Monday when a lawyer allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during court proceedings. The incident took place during the mentioning of cases before a Bench led by the CJI.
The lawyer allegedly tried to remove his shoe and throw it at CJI Gavai after he went near the dais, reported Bar and Bench, citing sources.
However, security personnel present inside the courtroom responded swiftly, intercepting the attempt and escorting the individual out of the premises.
As he was being removed, the lawyer was reportedly heard shouting, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (“We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan Dharma”).
Despite the disruption, the CJI remained composed and urged the courtroom to proceed as usual.
“Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” he said, continuing the day’s proceedings without pause.
The Supreme Court's security unit has launched an investigation into the incident. Further information regarding the lawyer’s identity and motive is currently awaited.
