Bhubaneswar, April 6: Surgeons at the Phulnakhara campus of Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital have successfully removed a vascular tumour on the nose of a 16-year-old boy employing the latest endoscopic endonasal approach.
The patient had come to the hospital with a vascular tumour in the nose extending up to the skull base which is known as Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma, Prof. (Dr.) Khageswar Rout, Professor and Head of the Department of ENT at the hospital, who led the surgical team, said.
“As the patient was young and open surgery would have left facial scars causing deformity, we opted to go for endoscopic endonasal procedure, which is a minimally invasive technique, using advanced gadgets,” he said.
The patient has been doing fine after surgery and is able to perform day to day activities without any problem from the next day, Prof. (Dr.) Rout said adding the boy’s family members were very happy with the outcome of the medical procedure and had thanked the surgical team.
The surgical team, besides Prof. (Dr.) Rout, comprised Dr. Bibekananda Acharya, Assistant Professor and Dr. Subrat Chandan Pradhan and Dr. Rakesh Giri, both Senior Residents. The Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, Phulnakhara campus, Prof. (Dr.) Arakhita Swain and Medical Superintendent, Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Kumar Lenka, extended all support for conducting the surgery.
