Kolkata, June 28: In a recent development in the alleged gang-rape case of a law student in Kolkata, West Bengal Police on Saturday confirmed that a security guard from the college has been taken into custody by the investigating officials.
It marks the fourth arrest in the sensational gang-rape case, where a female student was raped on the evening of June 25, which has triggered massive public outrage across the country.
As per reports, he was taken into custody on Friday night for interrogation, as his statements are considered crucial by the investigating officials in framing charges against the three accused who have already been arrested in the case.
According to the victim's statement to the police when she filed her complaint on Wednesday night, right after the assault, the security guard was a "helpless witness" who couldn’t do anything to help her.
The victim, in her statement, stated that after being forcibly taken to the guard room on college premises, the security guard was forced out. Subsequently, she was sexually assaulted by the three men.
However, a source from the city police said there were some inconsistencies in the statements made by the 55-year-old security guard. As a result, he was taken into custody for further questioning.
Police sources said that according to the victim’s complaint, the accused filmed the assault and threatened to make the video go viral on social media if she spoke about it. Investigators are also looking into whether the accused shared the video with others.
It has come to light that all three accused in the case—Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay—were associated with the Trinamool Congress' student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad.
Pictures of Monojit Mishra with several senior Trinamool Congress leaders have been widely shared on social media. He is a former student of the law college, while the other two are current students.
On Friday, all three were sent to police custody until July 1.
