Wanted Terrorist Claims Attack on Kapil Sharma's Cafe

A Khalistani terrorist on India's most-wanted list has claimed responsibility for a shooting incident at a Canadian cafe reportedly owned by comedian Kapil Sharma. The attack, which occurred late on July 9 in Surrey, British Columbia, has drawn attention to the global reach of extremist networks.

Unidentified assailants opened fire on the building housing Kap's Cafe, causing property damage but no injuries. Staff members were present inside at the time of the incident.

A Most-Wanted Fugitive

The individual claiming responsibility is Harjeet Singh Laddi, a Canada-based operative of the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Laddi is a high-profile fugitive wanted by India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) for his involvement in multiple extremist activities.

He is also the prime accused in the 2024 murder of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader in Punjab. The NIA has a reward of ₹10 lakh for information leading to his arrest.

Motive Linked to TV Show

According to sources, the motive for the attack stems from a segment on The Kapil Sharma Show. A character's humorous portrayal of Nihang Singhs, a traditional Sikh warrior order, was perceived as disrespectful and mocking of Sikh religious values.

A statement, reportedly from Laddi's faction, claimed that attempts to contact Sharma's manager were ignored and demanded a public apology from the comedian for hurting religious sentiments.

Investigation Underway

The Surrey Police Service has confirmed it is investigating the "shots fired" incident. In a statement, they noted that officers had collected evidence from the scene and were canvassing for witnesses and surveillance footage. So far, no suspect information has been released to the public.

The attack highlights the serious security risks that can arise when entertainment figures are perceived to have crossed cultural or religious lines, getting noticed by dangerous extremist groups overseas.
