Kendrapada, Sept 29: A woman suffered severe burn injuries after allegedly pouring petrol on herself and setting herself on fire at Barhapur village under Koilipur panchayat in Rajnagar police station limits of Kendrapada district. The incident was reported on Tuesday. Around 80% of her body was burnt in the incident. She was first taken to Rajnagar Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.
As her condition was critical, she was later shifted to Cuttack for further treatment. Dr Gyanaranjan Sahoo, Medical Officer at Rajnagar CHC, said the woman was admitted with severe burns covering around 80% of her body. She was given primary treatment at the health centre before being referred to Cuttack. Her relatives reportedly told doctors that she had poured petrol on herself before setting herself on fire.

Odisha has witnessed several serious self-immolation and fire attack incidents involving women and girls in recent months.
In one case, a 22-year-old college student allegedly set herself on fire outside a principal's chamber following allegations of inaction over a sexual harassment complaint against a professor. She suffered severe burns and was shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she later died.

In another incident in Puri's Balanga area, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly attacked by unidentified persons who poured an inflammable substance on her and set her on fire. She was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment.
A 13-year-old girl from Bargarh district also died at VIMSAR, Burla, after setting herself on fire at a relative's house.
Police investigations were ordered in these cases, while authorities also assured medical support for surviving victims.
