Karisma Kapoor's Ex-Husband Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 Crore Estate Row : Delhi HC Grants Interim Injunction, Orders Status Quo on Assets

New Delhi, April 30: The Delhi High Court has granted an interim injunction in the ongoing dispute over the estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, following a petition filed by his children, including actress Karisma Kapoor. The court has ordered that the status quo be maintained on Kapur's assets, preventing any third-party claims or rights from being established during the ongoing proceedings. Additionally, the court has directed that detailed financial statements be submitted and has prohibited the operation of foreign bank accounts and cryptocurrency holdings linked to the estate.

In its ruling, the court acknowledged the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the case, particularly the doubts raised over the authenticity of the Will. The court noted that the responsibility for clearing up these concerns falls to Priya Kapur (Defendant 1), the widow of Sunjay Kapur. The court further stressed that the preservation of the estate must be ensured while the matter is under trial, which could take some time. It also stated that all concerns raised by the petitioners must be addressed by Priya Kapur.

The case has garnered significant attention due to the high-value estate, which is estimated to be worth approximately ₹30,000 crore. The court had earlier reserved its decision on interim applications after hearing arguments from both sides. Karisma Kapoor’s children, from her previous marriage, have raised questions about the legitimacy of the Will.

In defense of Priya Kapur, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar argued that all relevant assets had been disclosed and denied any allegations of asset concealment or misappropriation. He further defended the Will’s validity, asserting that it was in line with a prior family Will.

Contrastingly, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children, highlighted alleged irregularities in the Will. These included concerns about its unregistered status, the language used, and questions regarding its preparation. Jethmalani emphasized that, given Priya Kapur’s dual role as both the executor and the primary beneficiary, the Will required closer scrutiny.

Complicating matters further, Sunjay Kapur’s mother has also contested the Will, claiming she was unaware of its existence and challenging the accuracy of asset disclosures. As the legal battle continues, the Delhi High Court’s interim order ensures that the assets remain protected until the final resolution of the case.
