Indian Priest George Koovakad Elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis

In a grand ceremony at the Vatican, Indian priest George Jacob Koovakad was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis. This significant event, held at the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica, saw the induction of 21 new cardinals from various countries. Koovakad's elevation brings the total number of Indian cardinals to six, further strengthening India's representation in the Vatican.

The ceremony, attended by clergy and dignitaries from around the world, began with a procession of the 21 cardinal-designates to the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis addressed the gathering, handed over the ceremonious cap and ring to the cardinal-designates, and presented them with a certificate accompanied by prayers. 

Hailing from the Archdiocese of Changanassery in Kerala, George Jacob Koovakad has had a distinguished career in the Church. Born on August 11, 1973, in Thiruvananthapuram, he was ordained as a priest on July 24, 2004. Koovakad pursued training for diplomatic service at the prestigious Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and began his diplomatic career at the Apostolic Nunciature in Algeria in 2006. Over the years, he held various significant roles, including Secretary of the Nunciature in South Korea and Iran, and Counsellor of the Nunciatures in Costa Rica and Venezuela.

Koovakad's elevation has been widely celebrated across India, particularly in Kerala. Political leaders, church heads, and the faithful have expressed joy and pride in this recognition. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan extended his greetings, highlighting the significance of this honor for the Christian community in India and the Syro Malabar Church. Cardinal George Alencherry and Cardinal Baselios Cleemis also praised Koovakad's commendable services to the Church.
