Mayurbhanj, Dec 4: In a remarkable transformation, a group of women from Women’s Cooperative Society in Mayurbhanj district has gone from struggling with daily wages to becoming self-reliant entrepreneurs. What began in 2010 with just 10–15 women making a meager 30 to 50 rupees daily by crafting items from sabai grass has now grown into an inspiring story of success, with over 650 women earning between Rs 6,000 to Rs 25,000 rupees a month.

Initially, the women were making simple products using sabai grass, but a turning point came in 2011 when they were inspired by an Anganwadi worker to learn handicrafts. Over time, they sharpen their skills in making a variety of products using sabai grass and dried date palm leaves, opening up new avenues for income. With training from the district's industrial center and support from organizations like ORMAS, these women not only became skilled artisans but also started their own self-help group. They also received training in designing and crafting beautiful products, which eventually gained attention beyond their local area.

By 2013, the society had 30 women, and they received additional training in new techniques. Their products, which included bags and home décor items, were so well-crafted that they began to attract attention at regional and national-level exhibitions. Initially, their sales were limited to block and district-level events, but soon, they were displaying their creations at prestigious exhibitions in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore.

Thanks to their determination and the support of ORMAS, the women received small machines to improve production. They expanded their reach, bringing together over 350 women from five neighboring villages, many of whom had previously received training from the cooperative. The impact was significant, not only did their monthly sales grow from 5,000 to 6 lakh rupees, but the cooperative's annual turnover soared from 70,000 rupees to more than 70 lakh rupees today.

One of the key factors behind this success was the empowerment of women, especially widows and differently-abled individuals. For many of these women, joining the cooperative society was not just a means of livelihood but also a path to dignity and independence. The cooperative has played a vital role in transforming the lives of women in the area, giving them the confidence to become self-reliant and break free from societal limitations.

According to Jayanti Mahanta, a member of the cooperative society, women who once earned just 1,000 rupees a month now make up to 10,000 rupees, while those who have become trainers can earn between 20,000 to 25,000 rupees monthly. The success of this initiative has not only brought economic benefits but also enhanced the social standing of these women, giving those equal rights and respect within their families and communities.

In a heartfelt message, Usharani Naik, a member and trainer of the cooperative society, spoke about how the program has transformed the lives of many women. "It has not only given us financial independence but also restored our dignity. Now, women can teach their daughters the value of self-reliance, showing them that they can achieve anything with determination."
