India Conducts 'Operation Sindoor', Strikes Terror Sites in Pakistan and PoK

The Indian armed forces launched "Operation Sindoor" on Wednesday, May 7th, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This action was undertaken in direct response to the April 22nd terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. The Indian Ministry of Defence has characterized the strikes as focused and non-escalatory.

Details of the Operation

According to a statement from India's Ministry of Defence, a total of nine sites were targeted during "Operation Sindoor." The ministry emphasized that the actions were specifically aimed at terrorist infrastructure and that no Pakistani military facilities were engaged. India has maintained that the operation demonstrates considerable restraint in both target selection and execution methods, fulfilling a commitment to hold accountable those responsible for the Pahalgam attack. The Indian Army declared "Justice is Served. Jai Hind!" on social media following the operation. A more detailed briefing on "Operation Sindoor" is anticipated later today.

Pakistan's Response

The Pakistani military has confirmed the strikes conducted by India early Wednesday morning. A spokesperson, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, stated that missiles fired by India targeted locations including Kotli and Muzaffarabad in PoK, and Bahawalpur in Pakistan's Punjab province. He asserted that Pakistan would respond to what he termed a "heinous provocation" at a time and place of its choosing. Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reportedly described the Indian action as an "act of war."

Context and Reactions

This retaliation follows a period of heightened tension after the Pahalgam attack, for which The Resistance Force (TRF), believed to be a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility.13 Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously vowed a strong response, stating India would pursue the perpetrators. Following today's operation, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other leaders have lauded the action.

"Operation Sindoor" marks a significant military response by India to the Pahalgam terror attack. While India has stressed the targeted and non-escalatory nature of its actions, Pakistan's confirmation and vow to retaliate indicate a serious escalation in tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The international community will be closely monitoring further developments.
