West Bengal Records 62% Turnout While Tamil Nadu Hits 56% in High Stakes Polls

Voters display intense democratic spirit across eastern and southern India.

West Bengal recorded a sharp voter turnout of 62.18% by 1 PM during its first phase of polling, while Tamil Nadu followed with 56.81% in its single-phase battle. Data released by the Election Commission of India indicates high participation despite soaring temperatures in both regions. In Bengal, districts like Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram led the charts with over 65% participation, while Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur district topped the southern state’s list.

First phase polling in West Bengal, covering 152 constituencies, faced several reports of local friction. Incidents of vehicle vandalism were reported in Nowda, alongside clashes between Trinamool Congress and BJP workers in Birbhum. While central forces moved quickly to secure booths near Cooch Behar, voters in Siliguri raised concerns over alleged proxy voting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a rally in Nadia, claimed the high turnout reflects a desire for change in the state.

Southern voters are deciding the fate of 234 assembly seats today in a single, high-stakes day of voting. The traditional rivalry between the DMK and AIADMK has evolved into a complex triangular contest with actor-politician Vijay’s TVK entering the fray. Prominent figures including Chief Minister MK Stalin, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan were among the early voters in Chennai.

West Bengal's electoral history is often defined by high-intensity participation and multi-phase polling strategies, a sharp contrast to Tamil Nadu's tradition of decisive single-day voting which typically favors established Dravidian ideologies.

Security personnel remain on high alert as voting continues until 6 PM. Over 5.73 crore voters in Tamil Nadu and nearly 3.6 crore in Bengal’s first phase are expected to determine the political landscape for the next five years.
