Complex Brain Tumour successfully removed at Berhampur SUM Hospital

Berhampur, June 17: In a major breakthrough in healthcare, the surgical team at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital, Campus-III, Sitalapalli, Berhampur, has successfully performed a complex brain tumour surgery on a 60-year-old woman. The procedure, carried out using advanced neurosurgical technology, marks a significant milestone for the hospital and healthcare services in southern Odisha.

The patient, identified as Saraswati Behera, was admitted to the hospital with severe headaches and weakness in her left arm and leg. Following a detailed neurological assessment, doctors conducted an MRI scan, which revealed a large tumour in her brain.

According to the medical team, the tumour was located in a highly sensitive area near the brainstem and critical nerves responsible for facial movement and hearing, making the surgery particularly challenging.

To ensure precision and safety during the procedure, the neurosurgery team employed state-of-the-art technology, including a high-precision neurosurgical microscope and a Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA). The advanced equipment enabled surgeons to clearly visualise delicate brain structures and safely remove the tumour while preserving healthy brain tissue and vital nerves.

The surgery was led by Dr. Prabhat Kumar Jagadev, Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery. He was assisted by Neuro-Anesthesia Specialist Dr. Pratyush Kumar Mishra, along with the ICU, Operation Theatre and Nursing teams.

Describing the achievement as a major milestone for the region, IMS and SUM Hospital Director Deb Prasad Dash said the successful surgery demonstrates that advanced neurosurgical procedures can now be performed locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to metropolitan cities or other states for specialised treatment.

“This achievement is not only about saving a patient's life but also about ushering in a new era of advanced neurosurgical care in Berhampur and southern Odisha. Our aim is to provide world-class healthcare services closer to home, ensuring patients have access to specialised treatment within the region,” he said.

The successful operation is being seen as a significant step forward in strengthening advanced healthcare infrastructure and specialised medical services in southern Odisha.
