Odisha Tourism on a record run: 56 Lakh visitors in 5 months

Bhubaneswar, May 30: Odisha’s tourism sector is witnessing an unprecedented surge, with more than 56 lakh tourists visiting the state in the first five months of 2026, signaling a strong revival and growing global interest in the state's diverse tourism offerings. Despite geopolitical uncertainties and economic challenges across several parts of the world, Odisha has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, powered by a unique blend of spirituality, heritage, eco-tourism and adventure experiences.

Tourism department data indicate that the state’s flagship destination, Puri, has recorded a 22 per cent rise in tourist arrivals compared to the corresponding period last year. The momentum follows a remarkable 2025, when Puri alone attracted nearly 2.43 crore visitors. Across Odisha, more than 1.13 crore domestic tourists and over 87,000 foreign visitors explored various destinations last year.

Officials attribute the growth to strategic investments in tourism infrastructure, expansion of coastal tourism circuits, world-class hospitality facilities, caravan tourism and the rapid development of water sports and adventure tourism hubs.

From pilgrimage destination to tourism powerhouse

While the revered Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri and the Sun Temple at Konark have traditionally drawn millions of pilgrims and heritage enthusiasts, Odisha is increasingly positioning itself as a holistic tourism destination. Visitors are now combining spiritual journeys with beach tourism, eco-retreats, wildlife experiences and adventure activities.

The state government's renewed focus on the Puri-Konark coastline is transforming the region into a major tourism corridor. Under the Odisha Tourism Policy 2026, special emphasis is being placed on water-based tourism and coastal recreation.

Major initiatives include the establishment of the Odisha Watermanship and Lifeguard Institute near Ramachandi, development of a modern scuba diving complex, and enhanced safety infrastructure along the coastline. Tourism officials believe these projects will significantly boost visitor confidence and expand Odisha's appeal among domestic and international travellers.

Blue Flag beaches fuel adventure tourism

Odisha's internationally acclaimed Blue Flag beach at Chandrabhaga has become a major attraction for adventure seekers. Activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking and other water sports are drawing increasing numbers of tourists through government and private-sector partnerships backed by robust safety measures.

Meanwhile, eco-tourism destinations at Ramachandi and Balighai are offering nature-based experiences that appeal to environmentally conscious travellers. Eco-retreats, glamping facilities and sustainable tourism initiatives are helping diversify the state's tourism portfolio.

Integrated coastal circuit emerging as growth engine

Tourism planners are banking on an integrated tourism circuit linking Puri, Konark and Chilika Lake to encourage longer visitor stays and higher spending. Improved coastal connectivity, better accommodation facilities and seamless travel experiences are expected to strengthen Odisha's competitiveness against other leading tourism states.

The success of eco-tourism initiatives is already evident. Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary generated revenue of ₹6.2 crore during the 2025-26 financial year while attracting a record 1.4 lakh visitors, showcasing the growing demand for nature-based tourism experiences.

Ambitious target ahead

Following the rollout of the revised Odisha Tourism Policy, the state government has set an ambitious target of attracting five crore domestic tourists annually and increasing tourism's contribution to the state's Gross Domestic Product to 13 per cent.

With spiritual tourism, coastal adventures, eco-tourism and world-class infrastructure converging, Odisha appears poised to emerge as one of India's most sought-after tourism destinations in the coming years.
