Bindyarani Devi brings home another remarkable weightlifting medal today
Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi captured a bronze medal in the women's 58kg category at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She delivered an outstanding performance on Monday, increasing India's overall medal count to six. This latest victory adds to her growing collection, following her previous silver win in Birmingham four years ago. Her success reflects India's continuing dominance in weightlifting events on the global stage over the past decade.
Starting her snatch attempts, coaches adjusted her initial weight down from 85kg to 83kg. She lifted this effortlessly before successfully completing 85kg on her second try. For her final snatch, she cleared 87kg. This score tied her with England's Eliza Pratt, but the Indian athlete stayed ahead on countback rules.
Entering the clean and jerk round, competition intensified. Judges disallowed her initial 110kg attempt due to an elbow buckle. Showing great mental toughness, she returned to clear 112kg on her second try. This pushed her total to 199kg. She tried for 116kg to chase a personal best but could not finish the lift. Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal dominated the field, taking gold with a record 229kg. Canada's Ann Sophie Taschereau earned silver by lifting 215kg.
Securing this podium finish carries deep emotional weight for the 27-year-old from Manipur. She fought through a severe knee injury during 2023. Furthermore, she had to adjust her training while shifting between the 55kg and 58kg weight classes over recent years.
India now holds six medals at the Glasgow games. The national squad boasts one gold, three silvers, and two bronzes. Fellow lifter Mirabai Chanu grabbed gold, while athletes like Rishikanta Singh and Gyaneshwari Yadav contributed valuable silver medals.
