Bhubaneswar, June 6: A man allegedly extorted Rs 2 lakh from a government engineer by impersonating as an official of the Odisha Chief Minister's Office (CMO) in Bhubaneswar.
After realizing that he had been duped, the victim, identified as Pratap Kumar Haripal who works as the Superintending Engineer of the Road and Building Division in Angul, lodged a written complaint at the Airfield Police Station in the city.
According to the complaint, Pratap received a phone call from a man named Janaki Ballav Mohapatra about a month ago who claimed to be an official from the Odisha Chief Minister’s Office.
The accused told Haripal that he had been transferred to Malkangiri and would need to pay Rs 2 lakh to stop the transfer. Worried by the call, Haripal agreed and personally went to Mohapatra's house in Bhimtangi area to pay him the Rs 2 lakh.
After taking the Rs 2 lakh, Mohapatra asked Haripal for another Rs 5 lakh. When Haripal refused, Mohapatra allegedly abused him and threatened to kill him.
Left with no choice, Haripal then filed a written complaint.
