Kendrapara, Sept 9: Hundreds of women carried out a late-night raid on a house allegedly being used for illegal liquor sales in Bankichhanda village under the Mahakalapada police station limits of Kendrapara district on Tuesday night.
According to reports, women from seven self-help groups (SHGs) in the village took the action after allegedly growing frustrated with the rampant sale of illicit liquor in the area. The women reportedly broke open the lock of the house where liquor was allegedly being sold and removed parts of its thatched roof.
Residents have reportedly been complaining about illegal liquor sales in Bankichhanda for a long time. They alleged that the easy availability of illicit liquor had led to an increase in the nuisance and misconduct caused by intoxicated persons in the village.
The women claimed that repeated complaints to the authorities had failed to bring any action. Left with no other option, they decided to take matters into their own hands, leading to Tuesday night's raid.
The alleged liquor trader, however, reportedly managed to flee the spot during the raid. Further details regarding any police action or seizure of liquor were not immediately available.
