Sambalpur, Aug 1: The Hirakud Dam authorities have intensified floodwater discharge as rising inflows continue to swell the reservoir. At present, 22 sluice gates have been opened to release excess water from the dam, while officials remain on high alert due to forecasts of more rainfall in the upper catchment over the next few days.

According to official data, the Hirakud reservoir is receiving an inflow of 4,15,017 cusecs of water, while 3,89,603 cusecs are being released downstream through the open gates. The reservoir's water level has climbed to 625.47 feet, prompting continuous monitoring by the dam authorities.

Officials said rainfall is expected to continue in the upper catchment area until August 4, and the situation is being closely watched to ensure safe reservoir management and downstream flood control.

Meanwhile, the increased discharge from Hirakud has affected connectivity in western Odisha. The Sambalpur–Sonepur road has been cut off after floodwaters inundated portions of the route, disrupting transportation and causing inconvenience to commuters.

The administration has urged residents in low-lying areas along the Mahanadi river system to remain vigilant and follow advisories issued by local authorities as water levels downstream continue to fluctuate.
