Heavy rainfall likely in Odisha from October 1 as low pressure forms over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar, Sept 29: After several days of dry weather, Odisha is likely to experience widespread rainfall starting from October 1, due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted.

According to IMD, dry conditions will prevail across the state until Tuesday. However, a fresh low-pressure system is expected to develop over North Odisha and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal on October 1, which may bring significant rainfall to several districts, especially in South Odisha.

Districts on alert

On October 1, heavy rainfall is expected in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts. Coastal and interior parts of the state may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain.

The intensity is expected to increase on October 2, with heavy rainfall likely in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri.

By October 3, the rainfall is expected to cover more regions, including Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Bargarh, indicating the system’s widespread impact.

Expert forecast

Senior agrometeorologist Prof. Surendranath Pasupalak has projected that the low-pressure system will likely form on September 30 over the Central Bay of Bengal. It is expected to intensify into a depression by October 2 and move towards the South Odisha coast. However, it may remain slightly offshore. On October 3, it could make contact with the South Odisha coast or the adjoining North Andhra Pradesh coastline.

Rainfall during festivities

On September 30, the weather is expected to remain dry. Light to moderate, scattered rainfall is possible on October 1 (Navami) in northern coastal regions, particularly in Puri, Ganjam, Nayagarh, and Gajapati.

On October 2 (Dashami), scattered rainfall is likely in coastal areas like Puri and Ganjam until noon, with rainfall activity expected to intensify in the afternoon.

By October 3, widespread rainfall is expected across most parts of the state, coinciding with post-Dussehra festivities.
