As per the directive issued by Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest and Environment Department, the use of plastic-wrapped flower bouquets, gift items, food packets, plastic plates, and cups has been strictly prohibited in official meetings, conferences, workshops, and gatherings. Thermocol (Styrofoam) plates and bowls have also been included in the ban.

The order, addressed to all departmental secretaries, encourages the use of sustainable alternatives such as steel and copper bottles during official functions. In addition, plastic utensils like trays, bowls, glasses, cups, and spoons have been banned, along with polythene bags, which are now to be replaced with paper, jute, or cloth alternatives.

Offices have also been directed to avoid bringing any food items—liquid or solid—in plastic containers or polythene bags. Steel containers are recommended instead.

The directive also bans the use of plastic packaging for flower bouquets and gift items, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a plastic-free work environment. The move is seen as a firm step towards promoting eco-friendly practices and reducing plastic waste in public institutions.
