IMD sounds yellow alert for 13 Odisha districts as Monsoon retreat begins

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for 13 districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and rainfall as the southwest monsoon continues its withdrawal from the state.

According to the weather forecast, isolated areas in the districts covered by the warning may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.

The warning comes at a time when the southwest monsoon is gradually retreating from Odisha. Despite the withdrawal process, local weather conditions may still trigger thunderstorms and rainfall in several parts of the state.

Monsoon Retreat Advances Across Odisha

The southwest monsoon began withdrawing from Odisha on Thursday, with the process covering most parts of Bargarh district and some areas of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Balangir, Nuapada and Nabarangpur districts.

The changing weather pattern signals a gradual transition away from the monsoon season. The IMD has indicated that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to withdraw from additional parts of eastern India over the next few days.

Residents Advised to Stay Alert During Thunderstorms

Although the monsoon is retreating, the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds remains in the districts under the yellow warning. People are advised to follow official weather updates and take precautions during lightning activity, particularly by avoiding open fields and exposed locations.

The IMD has not issued a weather warning for any Odisha district for Saturday, October 10, according to the report. Residents are encouraged to monitor subsequent forecasts for any changes in weather conditions.
