Odisha Weather update: Thunderstorms and gusty winds to lash seven coastal districts

Gusty winds and thunderstorms threaten seven districts across Odisha.

Meteorological experts at India Meteorological Department Bhubaneswar have issued yellow warnings for isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph across seven districts. Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack remain under high alert for October 10. Coastal regions in Odisha historically experience rapid, volatile weather shifts during the post-monsoon transition phase.

Recent daily observations indicate significant precipitation is already impacting northern areas, with the Jamda station in Mayurbhanj recording 52.0 mm of rainfall. Other stations in Mayurbhanj, such as Shamakhunta and Bijatala, recorded 36.3 mm and 35.0 mm respectively. Talcher registered the highest maximum temperature across the plains at 35.6 degrees Celsius, while Phulbani remained the coolest location at 20.0 degrees Celsius.

Light to moderate precipitation will likely remain isolated, affecting 25 percent or less of stations in districts including Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Remaining districts across western and southern Odisha are forecast to stay dry. Thermometer readings will show no large change in maximum day temperatures or minimum night temperatures during the next six to seven days over Odisha.

Residents in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack should prepare for consistently partly cloudy skies accompanied by persistent possibilities of rain, lightning, or thunderstorm development over the next seven days. Recent realized data shows Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum of 34.7 degrees Celsius, while Cuttack reached 33.6 degrees Celsius. Moving forward, maximum daytime temperatures for the twin cities will steadily hover between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius. Minimum nighttime temperatures will settle comfortably between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius. Citizens traversing these urban centers are advised to monitor official updates and exercise caution during sudden localised weather changes.
